An AI Sales Coach Designed to Build Confidence, Not Dependence (with Pianpian Xu Guthrie)
Most sales training happens after the fact. A manager listens to a recorded call days later, or a rep sits through a workshop months after the habit that needed fixing first showed up. By the time the feedback arrives, the moment it was actually needed has already passed, and the next live call is just as unscripted as the last one.
Pianpian Xu Guthrie built Amotions AI on a simpler idea: put the coaching inside the conversation itself. The platform runs as a private overlay during live sales and customer calls, reading the words, the tone, and the shape of the conversation, then surfacing a next-best move that only the seller can see. It never joins the call as a participant, and the buyer never knows it is there.
In this episode of Lead with AI, Dr. Tamara Nall speaks with Pianpian about the sociology research that shaped her thinking on emotional intelligence, the unlikely industries where Amotions AI has taken hold, and why she still wants every seller to stay in control of the conversation even with an AI whispering in their ear.
Where the Idea for Amotions AI Started
Pianpian grew up in a village in China and studied in both China and Japan before earning a master's in social science from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She then went to Yale, where she completed graduate work in sociology, including a thesis on social mobility and psychological well-being, and stayed on as a teaching and research fellow. None of it was aimed at a startup. It was aimed at understanding why people struggle to connect with each other.
That question followed her into a decade of product management roles at GoDaddy, Ticketmaster, and Priceline, and later a head-of-product role at the Series A startup Winnie. Pianpian says the idea for Amotions AI came from her own early days as a product manager, when she kept wishing for something that could sit beside her and catch her before she said the wrong thing to a colleague or a manager. She talked about that idea with friends for years before she finally built it.
Six Signals, One Private Prompt
Amotions AI is not a transcript reader. According to Pianpian, the platform combines the words a person says with tone, emotion, the arc of the conversation so far, and a company's own playbook, then turns all of that into a single, private suggestion for what the seller should do next. Training is calibrated to each customer's own objections, scripts, and product knowledge rather than a generic model.
The product has three parts built around one conversation. Before a real call, a seller can rehearse against an AI standing in for a difficult buyer. During the call, private prompts appear on the seller's own screen. Afterward, the conversation is scored and reviewed, so the next rehearsal targets whatever went wrong. Pianpian describes it as a system built to make each conversation smarter than the one before it.
What a $160,000 Month Looks Like
One of Amotions AI's customers is the owner of a hearing care practice with several locations, who came looking for help after noticing his providers were not listening closely enough to patients during consultations. He started with a small pilot among a few providers, who used the platform to rehearse consult scenarios and review real conversations afterward.
According to Pianpian, monthly sales at the practice grew by $160,000, the highest month the business had ever had. The team expanded the tool to every provider soon after.
A newer customer had a smaller, quieter win. A first-time insurance agent who did not yet know how to handle objections in the moment started using Amotions AI's live prompts during calls. According to Pianpian, the agent's confidence changed almost immediately, and she later said it felt like finally having backup on the line.
Still Wants a Human in the Driver's Seat
A natural worry about coaching someone in real time is that they stop learning and start reading a script off a screen. Pianpian pushes back on that directly. She compares Amotions AI to a GPS: it points a seller in the right direction and offers a suggestion at the right moment, but the seller still has to drive the conversation and decide what to actually say.
She also does not expect the tool to replace salespeople. Some early, simple interactions may move to chatbots because they are faster, she says, but she believes most human-facing sales and service relationships will stay human. Her hope, in fact, is that a seller who gets good enough eventually needs Amotions AI less, at which point the platform can focus on whoever is newest to the role.
The Providers Who Wanted Data, Not Feelings
Pianpian did not originally build Amotions AI with dental practices or hearing clinics in mind. Both found her. She recalls a dental practice team telling her they had talked to several AI companies before, but that Amotions AI was the only one that could actually analyze and coach the soft skills, the listening, the patience, the follow-up questions that shape whether a patient trusts a recommendation.
What stuck with Pianpian was how the team framed their own reason for choosing her product: dentists like facts. Turning something as fuzzy as bedside manner into a pattern an AI can score, and a provider can act on is exactly the kind of translation her sociology training prepared her to think about.
Built to Make People More Human, Not Less
Amotions AI's five-year vision, in Pianpian's own words, is to put the platform in the hands of every customer-facing professional, with sales teams as only the starting point. She wants people to walk into a hard conversation feeling like they can handle it.
That ambition runs into an obvious question: does an AI companion pull people closer together or push them further apart? Pianpian's answer starts from what the job of selling, or of practicing medicine, or of managing a client relationship actually demands. Truly skilled emotional intelligence takes most people years of deliberate practice to build. She sees Amotions AI's job as carrying some of that cognitive load, the memorized objections, the mental checklist of what to ask next, so a person can spend more of the conversation simply paying attention to the other person in front of them.
Quick Answers
What is Amotions AI? Amotions AI is a real-time AI sales coaching platform. It runs privately during live sales and customer calls, offers AI roleplay practice beforehand, and scores conversations afterward, without ever joining the call itself.
Does Amotions AI join the call, the way a bot or a note-taker would? No. According to Pianpian, Amotions AI runs as a private overlay visible only to the seller. The buyer never sees it and is never aware it is part of the conversation.
What results has an Amotions AI customer reported? House of Hearing, a hearing care practice, reported a $160,000 increase in monthly sales after rolling the platform out to its providers. This is a customer-reported figure, not an independently audited one.
Will Amotions AI replace human salespeople? Pianpian does not think so. She expects some simple, early-stage interactions to shift toward chatbots because they are faster, but believes most sales and service relationships will stay human, with AI handling the coaching in the background.
Who is Pianpian Xu Guthrie? Pianpian Xu Guthrie is the Founder and CEO of Amotions AI. Before founding the company, she led product management and growth roles at GoDaddy, Ticketmaster, and Priceline, and was head of product at the startup Winnie, following graduate studies in sociology at Yale.
